My office receives phone calls from U.S. Citizens and green card holders asking about how to apply for green card for parents.

If you are a US Citizen over twenty-one years old you can help your parents obtain a green card.  If you are a US Citizen over twenty one years old certain relatives are considered to be your immediate relatives. This means that there are an unlimited number of visas available in that category.
 
The procedure in helping your parents obtain a green card depends on if they are present in the United States. If they are present in the USA and entered legally in a category that allows them to adjust status the process is as follows:
The US Citizen prepares an I-130, G-325a and I-864 forms
The Immigrant Parent prepares an I-485, G-325a, and I-765 forms. The parent must also undergo a medical examination from a Doctor approved by USCIS. The list of acceptable doctors in found at uscis.gov. These forms are all prepared and mailed to the approporiate USCIS office.
 
If the parent is not in the USA, the procedure is as follows:
The US Citizen files an I-130 form. Once that form is approved the file is sent to the National Visa Center for further processing that includes the US Citizen filing an affidavit of support form and the parent sending in their original documents.
Once the National Visa Center is done processing the file it is sent to the appropriate US Consulate for the visa interview
