The New York Times ran an interesting article by David Leonhardt titled: Hispanics, the New Italians .

The article was about how Hispanics, like many other ethnic groups before them, including the Irish, Germans and Italians, are moving up the economic ladder and are assimilating into America.  This has been a concern as, unlike immigrants in the past, the current group of immigrants can stay in daily contact with their home countries due to telephones, computers, Skype etc.  “A wealth of data suggests that Latinos, who make up fully half of the immigration wave of the past century, are already following the classic pattern for American immigrants.”

“They have arrived in this country in great numbers, most of them poor, ill educated and, in important respects, different from native-born Americans.  The children of immigrants, however, become richer and better educated than their parents and overwhelmingly speak English.  The grandchildren look ever more American.”

The income disparity between immigrant Latino households trails the national median household income by $24,000 which is more than 40 percent.  However, in the second generation this gap is much smaller (about $10,000).

Progress is being made in the second and subsequent generations of Hispanic immigrants.  This is a great thing for our country as more income means more taxes which can be used to fund schools, build or repair highways and other infrastructure, and pay for other public services (like police and firemen).

Progress is also being made in education. “For decades, the average Latino immigrant has had slightly more than a junior high school education.  An average child of a Latino immigrant today completes high school and attends almost one year of college.” In addition, a typical grandchild will attend even more college.  The number of Latinos who have graduated from college has almost doubled to more than 250,000 in the last ten years alone.

It is not all good news.  As you can expect Latino immigrants still face challenges. Parents without legal status are less likely to help in the schools that their children attend.  Also they are less likely to ask for a raise at work or leave a job for a better opportunity.  They are also less easily able to start a business. 

However, by these economic measures, progress is being made by Latino immigrants.  This is good news for Latino immigrants, their families and the United States.

Comprehensive immigration reform is becoming more and more likely.   This will only accelerate the rate of progress Latino immigrants and their families are making in the United States.  This will benefit us all.
