Do I Need An Attorney to Apply For a Green Card?
The process used to obtain a green card is the same whether or not you hire an attorney to represent you. (You may wish to read our blog article titled: “How to get a green card?”) You should be aware, however, that the time it takes to get a green card (and whether the case can be approved at all) can be determined based on how the case is prepared.
You should seriously consider hiring an experienced immigration attorney to handle your green card case so that no issues are overlooked and no mistakes are made. Many clients think they are dealing with a straight-forward case when in fact they are not. There are various grounds that can make an applicant “inadmissible”. It is much better for an attorney to review your situation with you to make sure that the applicant qualifies for the green card.
An experienced immigration attorney working on your case will make it much more likely that the application can be approved. He can help you prepare for and overcome any problem areas in your case. This is much more likely to be done if you are dealing with an attorney from the beginning. It is much more difficult for an immigration attorney to correct mistakes in a case which has already been filed than for him to simply file the case without any mistakes. You want to make sure that the best choice is made and that the case, once filed, will process as quickly as possible with no unnecessary delays in your case.
Over the years I have had clients consult with me after trying to handle the green card process themselves. These cases were significantly delayed due to simple mistakes which were made by the clients. My office was able to fix the problems and and quickly obtain green cards in these cases.
