In 2019 the U.S. Citizenship fee for the N-400 is $725. This is broken down as follows: $640 for the application processing and $85 for biometrics. Biometrics (fingerprinting, photo, digital signature) is done to do a security background check (FBI) and immigration check on the applicant.
If you are 75 or older USCIS does not make you pay the biometrics portion of the total N-400 fee.
If you are applying based on your military service you may be exempt from the whole U.S. Citizenship fee. Check this USCIS page or with an immigration attorney to make sure you qualify.
The N-400 may be filed online or via mail.
