Earlier this month California Govern0r Jerry Brown signed legislation which will allow undocumented immigrants the ability to obtain drivers licenses.  Undocumented immigrants could not obtain drivers licenses, in California, since 1993.  In that year then Governor Pete Wilson signed a law which denied driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.

The new card will not establish eligibility for employment or voting (do not vote if you are not a U.S. Citizen) . The legislation also makes drivers eligible for insurance and training, including written and driving tests required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

It is expected that over 1 million undocumented immigrants will seek driver’s licenses, under the new law, over the next 3 years in California.

If you have questions about obtaining a driver’s license or any other immigration questions please do not hesitate to contact this office.  I do not recommend obtaining your driver’s license without speaking to an Immigration Attorney first.  We would be happy to talk to you for FREE.
