Will Comprehensive Immigration Reform Be More Difficult?

The Washington Post ran a story recently titled: “Why President Obama just made comprehensive Immigration reform tougher

It is a very interesting article which explains how the prospects for comprehensive immigration reform, while dim before, have become, as a result of his executive order more dim. The article posits that the executive order has stirred up real opposition to some form of permanent legalization of illegal immigrants.

The article explains how republican attitudes over comprehensive immigration reform has shifted over the last year. “Although they supported citizenship over deportation 43 to 38 percent in November 2013, today they support deportation/involuntary departure oer citizenship 53 to 27 percent.

The article does not blame this shift only on President Obama’s Executive Order. “The changes described above,of course, might not be only a result of what Obama did. They also could be influences by the summer border crises, for instance. But it’s pretty logical to assume that Obama’s actions pushed things in this direction….”

It appears that this short term victory in changes in immigration policy may come at a very long term cost.
